Description

A delightful and easy recipe for Italian Herbs and Cheese Bread that’s golden and crusty on the outside and soft and cheesy on the inside.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast)
  • 1¾ cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons dried Italian herbs (like basil, oregano, thyme, and rosemary)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Extra flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. Pour warm water into a large mixing bowl, sprinkle in the sugar, and add the yeast. Let sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Blend in flour, salt, dried herbs, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese to form a sticky dough.
  3. Dust a clean surface with flour and knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add flour as needed.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let rise in a warm location for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough gently, shape it into a loaf or place in a greased bread pan, then let rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) placing a shallow pan of water at the bottom for added moisture.
  7. Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and sounding hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Let cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Store the bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
