Description

A delicious twist on classic French toast with a creamy, custard-soaked bread topped with a crispy sugar layer.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of French bread
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (for caramelizing)
  • Optional: Fresh berries and whipped cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Cut the French bread into thick slices and arrange them in a baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour the mixture over the bread slices, ensuring they are soaked properly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Bake the French toast for 30-35 minutes or until set and golden.
  6. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the top and use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until golden and crispy.
  7. Serve warm, topped with fresh berries and whipped cream if desired.

Notes

For the best flavor, use day-old French bread. Cover and refrigerate the bread soaked in custard overnight for better results.
