A delicious twist on classic French toast with a rich custard base and a caramelized topping, perfect for breakfast or brunch.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf of French bread
- 6 large eggs
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- Butter for greasing
- Fresh berries for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
- Cut the French bread into thick slices and arrange them in the baking dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the egg mixture over the bread, making sure each slice is coated.
- Cover and refrigerate the mixture for at least 120 minutes or overnight.
- Before baking, sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Optionally, garnish with fresh berries and serve with maple syrup.
Notes
For best texture, use day-old French bread and let it soak in the custard for at least 2 hours or overnight.
